Neurons growing in a cell culture

These time lapse animations use phase contrast microscopy to show neural stem cells in a nutrient medium for 4 hours.  They reveal the dynamic growth and recycling of dendrites and synapses as neurons establish relationships with each other.  The social behavior of these cells creates the incredible properties of the mind and brain.

Texas is Bad for Presidents

historical-nonfiction:

In 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first Texas-born president of the U.S. The only other Texas-born president was Lyndon B. Johnson.

U.S. presidents who died in Texas are JFK (assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas) and Lyndon B. Johnson (who died the same place he was born, the Johnson ranch outside Stonewall, where he suffered a fatal coronary on January 22, 1973).

Rainbow light experiments continue in our new home! These were created by blocking the light on two glass doors with big paper, cutting out holes, and then placing diffraction grating over the holes. Serious WOW factor! This morning light is breathtaking!
